The pictures aren’t the greatest, but the pictures from our photographer should be in this week, and I can show you more, along with the decor and setup for the Monster Cookie station and the rest of the party. Until then, enjoy these cuties making their monster cookies!
Decorate Your Cookie Bar
Have you ever been at an event for children where they can decorate their own cookies or cupcakes? I have been to tons, and personally, I don’t often enjoy them. Sure, the kids do, and I guess in the end, that’s all that matters, but I almost despise them. The kids get all goopy from trying to spread the icing, the first two kids there usually empty the sprinkle bottles all across the table and leave none for others, unless you want to pick them off the table that someone has undoubtedly sneezed on… I find it to just be too messy.
When I was planning my Boo’s monster party though, I thought a cookie decorating activity could be cute and monster related, so I decided to give it a try. However, I wanted to make sure that I didn’t have messy, icing covered children climbing all over my patio furniture (sorry, I’m not a fan of sticky mess! Dry mess, bring it on. Not sticky though.) So here’s my solution!
I thought of all of the different things we could use for monster parts. I came up with eyes, hair, mouth, teeth, spikes, fur, and polka dots. Then, I bought small little craft storage bags at the dollar store. They were $1 for 80! I had 20 kids coming, so it worked out perfectly. I divided all of the “decorations” so that each kid could grab a cookie, a plate, and all of their decorations quickly. Best of all, it was pre-portioned, so no kid could spill the whole jar of sprinkles onto his or her one cookie.
Everyone at the party thought I was crazy and that all of this bagging must have taken forever, but honestly, I doubt it took more than an hour, and I just did it all while I watched tv one night. It was easy and pretty quick.
The eyes were made out of mini marshmallows that were cut in half and dabbed with black icing. I used the tubes of black decorators icing that you can buy at any store that sells Wilton – it is much easier than dying it. I used a small round tip (which screws right onto the tubes) and piped a little on each marshmallow half. It seemed like a monotonous job, but it was really quick to make these – I made 80, 4 for each kid.
The fur was regular sprinkles. I bought 6 colors of sprinkles (which are sooo much cheaper if you buy them from a bulk store) in the party colors. I put a small spoonful of 3 colors in each bag, creating a cute layered effect.
The polka dots were just brightly colored sequin sprinkles, that I again divided up into mini bags.
The teeth or spikes were candy corn – I could only find pastel or Halloween, so I went with pastel. I was desperately avoiding a Halloween feel since my monster theme could easily go Halloween.
I used licorice string in two different colors for the hair and the spikes. I bought a bag of green and a bag of purple, and each bag had about 20 strings in it. I cut the strings into four pieces, and put four pieces of green and purple in each bag.
I bought a big tub of grocery store icing to use as “glue”. I purposely didn’t say icing, because this was the only thing that wasn’t preportioned and I didn’t want a lot of wastage. Calling it “glue” gave them the idea that it was used to attach their things, not to pile half the bottle onto their cookie so they can lick it off and add more. They did super awesome with it, and the parents didn’t even need to help them!

That is a genius idea! I actually find those things very disgusting too. Great solution!!

Awesome idea.
Do you have a picture of what the cookie ended up looking like?
Sarah says
No – because the kids ate them too fast! And we just let them have total freedom, we didn’t instruct them on what to do, so everyones looked different.
