Ombre-Style Glittered Candle Holders

I love me some glitter.  I really do.  But it's gotta be classy glitter - not like the big chunky glittered stuff we made back in the 80s.   When I was at Michael's last Christmas (yes that's how long ago it was), I found these tubes of gorgeous brown and copper glitter, and I have been saving them for just the perfect occasion. (When the closest craft store is two hours away, everything has to be saved for the "perfect occasion".)  Then, the idea for these candle holders came to me, and I knew it was just such an occasion.

To make these, you will need small clear votive holders, glitter in three coordinating shades, white glue (if you watch Craft Wars, you know what holds glitter the best!), tape (any kind will work), and a foam brush.  A paper plate (or two) will help keep everything as tidy as possible.

Start by wrapping  a piece of tape around the votive to create a band.  I made all three of mine different widths, but you can measure it if you want it to be precise. 

Next, apply glue with the foam brush - apply a good coat, because you want the glitter to coat it all.

Sprinkle glitter onto the candle holder.  Trust me when I say sprinkle it on.  I tried rolling the candle holder in the glitter but the glue smudges and makes blobs all over the candle holder.  Not cool.

Peel your tape off to reveal a clean line at the edge of your glitter.  You will still be able to see some glue through the glitter, but don't worry, it will dry clear.

Repeat this process with the next colour of glitter.  The trickiest part of this whole project is making sure you get glitter right to the edge of the previous colour without wiping any away with your brush.

To finish up, repeat the process with the third colour, and then let it dry.

I switched it up with my third candle holder - before applying tape to break off the sections, I stuck on a maple leaf vinyl decal that I made with my Silhouette.  I followed the exact same process, and when I was done applying the glitter, I used a vinyl hook to peel the leaf off.  It left this cute little peek a boo leaf shape.
